Handbag Glossary

By Shari | December 27, 2008 | Filed Under Expert Advice, Handbags
Lately I’ve heard people comment that they don’t really know the difference between bag styles – for instance a hobo vs a satchel. For all of you wondering what makes a tote a “tote” and what top grain leather really is, here is a glossary of terms we use on Handbags.com often.

Backpack Handbag: A handbag designed to be carried on the back like a standard backpack. Can have one or two shoulder straps and can be carried with both or just one like a sling.

Baguette: A handbag that is long and narrow in shape kind of like a French bread loaf.

Bucket Bag: Named because of it’s shape like a bucket. These bags usually have a rounded bottom and are taller than they are wide.

Clutch Bag: A small bag with no straps or handles that is designed to be carried under the arm or by hand. Often used as an evening bag.

Coin Purse: Sometimes called a change purse. A small bag designed to hold coins and often carried in another handbag.

Cosmetic Bag or Case: A bag designed to hold makeup and other cosmetics and toiletries while traveling – whether short or long distances.

East West (or E/W): A bag that is wider than it is tall. Includes bags like Baguettes.

Eco-Friendly Handbags: Any handbag made with materials that benefit the environment in some way. Includes bags made from recycled products, repurposed products, sustainable materials, and organic materials.

Evening Bag: A shoulder bag, clutch, or other style handbag designed for use during special occasions, weddings, or a night out on the town.

Fanny Pack (or waist pack): A bag worn on the waist that can carry smaller items and essentials. Often used during travel.

Flap Bag: A purse that features a a folding flap closure.

Hobo Bag: A shoulder bag that typically features a slouchy posture, scooped center, and long shoulder strap.

Leather Handbag: A bag made from any tanned animal skin. Most often refers to cowhide.

North South (or N/S): A bag that is taller than it is wide. Includes bags like Bucket Bags.

Organizer Bag: A handbag with compartments and pockets for organized storage of makeup, wallets, coin purses, appointment books, and other personal items.

Patent Leather: A glossy finished leather.

Quilted: Material that features a topstitched pattern similar to a quilt.

Satchel: A bag that usually has a top closure, top carry handles and a flat bottom. Sometimes has a triangular side profile.

Shoulder Bag: Any bag that can be carried on the shoulder with a strap.

Sling Bag: Slings are like backpacks with one strap and are designed to be carried on one shoulder.

Straw Bag: Straw bags are any handbag made from straw materials which can include seagrass, rattan, straw, corn husk, and willow.

Suede: Leather treated to produce a velvet-like finish.

Top Grain Leather: The top layer of leather (leather is split into multiple layers before it is used).

Tote Bag: Usually a large, double handled bag with an open top and open main compartment with few pockets if any.

Wristlet: A clutch or wallet carried on the wrist by a small attached loop.
