How’s a novice handbag lover to navigate the market and discern between hype and quality? Let’s break it down to the five components necessary to build a high quality handbag:
1. Attention to Detail: There shouldn’t be any raw or unfinished edges on an excellent handbag. All the pieces should be consistent in color and texture. Designers, such as Chloe, will include gorgeous embellishments on their bags like embroidery, hand beading and appliqué. These one of a kind treatments are the equivalent to a work of art.
2. Accurate Stitching: The stitching on your handbag should be even and pleasing to the eye. Many top bag makers, like Coach will double stitch seams. Lesser handbags will have flimsy stitching and loose seams. Another way to spot a low quality bag: Look inside and see how the lining is constructed. If the lining looks cheap and scrappy, that’s a good indication the bag is not top notch.
3. Quality Materials: A great bag should be constructed of only the best natural fabrics, inside and out. Leather is of course the most durable and popular handbag option. The finest leathers will be flawless and buttery. Vinyl bags are to be avoided. While many elegant fabrics are selected for designer bags, be warned: these bags show dirt and will be much more difficult to care for over the years. Save the fabric bags for special nights out and opt for leather for your everyday bag.
4. Durable and Distinctive Hardware: Look closely at the locks, buckles and any other metal details on the bag. Determine what type of metal was used. Plastic should be shunned. Brass hardware is nice but remember that it will tarnish, as will silver. Nickel, palladium and other treated metals will withstand wear and tear without sacrificing their shine. Check all zippers and other closures before you make your purchase. Zippers should open and close with ease and all the locks should operate perfectly.
