Commonly Mispronounced Designer Names
Fashionistas can be an intimidating bunch. They’re impeccably dressed and always on the cutting edge of new trends, and they know it too. If you’re discussing the latest collections or your favorite designers with these couture divas, be confident in your knowledge and opinions because fashion is, at heart, about personal taste. But mispronouncing a designer name, a common verbal faux pas, can be downright embarrassing around fashion experts.
Let’s face it – the fashion world is just slightly judgmental, so if people are going to judge you, then make the verdict positive. If you become well-versed in the pronunciation of popular designer names, including classics and newcomers, you won’t think twice when asking a sales clerk about a new Balenciaga dress or Louis Vuitton bag. In the spirit of education, here is a list of frequently-mispronounced designer names with helpful phonetic breakdowns, syllable by syllable.
Before we begin, it is worth noting a few characteristics about the languages from which these names derive. The entire reason that designer names can be tongue-twisters for English speakers is that most of them are not in English. Many famous designer names are Italian or French, and letters are pronounced differently in these two languages than they are in English. In both, the letter ‘e’ sounds like ‘ay,’ and the letter ‘i’ sounds like ‘ee.’ Moreover, in French the final consonant is often not pronounced at all. So while the ‘r’ is heard at the end of ‘Dior,’ the ‘x’ is silent at the end of ‘Lacroix.’ In Italian, vowels are much clearer than they are in most English words. Be sure to annunciate each vowel, which makes ‘Tagliapietra’ such a fun word to roll of the tongue. We won’t get into the grammar rules of all the Germanic and Asian languages; just remember that English pronunciations won’t apply to many designer names. Don’t be put off by these foreign words. Instead, have fun with the playful, bubbly sounds of these names, which are often as stylish as the clothes and handbags bearing them.

The Perfect Tote for Last Minute Beach Vacations
|
I love going to the beach, but I hate when I walk away with sand on everything that I own. It’s not easy to find a bag that can resist not only sand and water, but also sun. While I was reading Vogue I found the perfect answer to my beach bag problem. They suggest a tote by Lisa Perry that is transparent with a hint of bright color. This tote will not only have you turning heads, but will also keep all of your necessities away from sun, sand and water! Although transparent handbags was a trend that didn’t have many people on-board, totes is another story. What’s great about having a beach tote that you can see through is that you can tell your essentials apart from one another. No more reaching for the ipod instead of the cell phone, or the bug spray instead of the sun lotion. You can see everything! |

Designer Blog: eenamaria’s hot summer handbags – stylin’ and Mondrian!
Summer’s temperature just soared compliments of the June launch of eenamaria’s sizzling new handbag line, the Chelsea Boi.
The bags’ striking graphics are an homage to Yves St. Laurent’s iconic Mondrian inspired color-block prints. Their slick construction is further infused with the radiant energy of Manhattan’s downtown scene of the 1970’s, and their mobile-oriented components enable women to speed through each “New York minute” in a color-saturated flash of functional fashion.
Urban nomads the world over will also find their needs stylishly met via the line’s broad size selection. The small “It’s for my Pencils” wrist bag neatly fits essentials for those that travel light, and the messenger size “I mean Bizniss” tote handily stashes everything required – to do just that. Additionally, eenamaria’s firm belief that wallet size should not impede fabulousness is evident in the Chelsea Boi line’s modest pricing
The Chelsea Boi line launches at a time when eenamaria’s media presence is gaining. The year kicked off with lead urban nomad and company president Sarah Morgan being nominated to become a 2008 Fashion Group International “Rising Star Nominee.” Then in June Sarah was interviewed by Jill Scott of NY1 in a piece discussing how to tell good construction when handbag shopping.
The month ended with a star-studded bang when a delighted eenamaria was informed that the “I Mean Bizniss” tote had been selected by the Grammy committee as the carry-all for the Grammy Gala goodies. Then, when eenamaria was just regaining their breath, they were thrilled to learn that the Accessories Council had chosen the “Got it goin on” clutch to be the VIP gift bag for the August ACE “100 Years of Accessories” awards show.
This summer we hope that you’ll check out our designs online and consider us as the source of your very next VIB – Very Important Bag!

Figure Fixers – How Your Handbag Can Make You Look Thinner
Handbags come in all shapes and sizes, just like we do. The right bag can definitely help accentuate some of our best features while drawing attention away from areas we’re not too crazy about.
For example, the best style of handbag for petite body types are certainly not the larger carryalls. These tend to overwhelm a smaller frame making it appear shorter than it is. Rather than sport a large bag if you are petite, try a cute clutch like the rattan and leather one by Cole Haan which can be used day or night. A smaller handbag like Gustto’s denim & leather pocketbook is another option. Smaller bags also look great in bold colors and patterns since they can add flair to your ensemble without drawing attention to your height.
For the bottom heavy gal, a shorter strapped bag works best by drawing attention up and away from the areas you would rather not accentuate, as opposed to a bag with longer straps that grazes the hip. You don’t want a bag that will draw attention down towards your hips and thighs, so keeping it higher up and throwing in a splash of color will keep the eyes off of your “problem area.” The Michael Kors Jet Set Small Box Satchel is the perfect example of a bag that would work beautifully with a pear shaped body type.
An apple shaped or top heavy body would be most complimented by a handbag that hangs lower down. You want the bag to accentuate your hips rather than your upper body as well as lengthen and whittle your waist. This can be done beautifully with a white Italian leather pouch bag by Charm and Luck, or a quirky and fun carryall with longer straps like the polka dotted cutie by Tocca. A small clutch also works well for this body type as it can be carried at waist or hip level, once again drawing away from your chest and helping your body look more proportionate. And with the latest trend being carrying your clutch as your everyday bag, this may be the easiest and best way to fix your figure.
While boy shaped or narrow body types can get away with pretty much any size and shape of bag, bright colors and geometric patterns work well to add some definition to an otherwise curveless shape. Hip skimming bags can add some oomph to small hips and a cute flirty handbag can define narrow shoulders when worn on the arm.
Adding the right handbag for your body type to your wardrobe is another simple and effective way to flatter your figure. With so many sizes and shapes of bags available, there is no excuse for carrying a bag that overwhelms your frame, highlights any problem areas, or makes you look disproportionate. After all, you wouldn’t want to wear jeans that didn’t make your bum look fantastic, right? So, why carry a bag that doesn’t fit you fabulously?

$$$Making Your Dollar Go Farther$$$
In hard economic times, everybody is looking for new ways to re-use items and to save money on the items that they need to buy. I’m not sure why it’s taken everyone so long to jump on the bandwagon; I’ve been looking for vintage and used handbags for a long time now! Maybe it’s just because I’ve been on quite a budget these days. Although I blog about bags that cost hundreds of dollars, the reality is that not everybody can afford them. Erin and I always give you sales and deals updates, so keep looking for those(you can save a lot of money on designer bags just by watching out for sales). You can also keep your eye out for great deals at unusual places. Don’t only look at the local mall for great deals on brand name handbags, there are a few other places that I’ve found can save you a lot of money! Keep in mind that you probably won’t find something on your first visit; try checking these places out once a week and you will come across some good finds. Find your local thrift store(some are definitely better than others). Keep in mind the area that you are in and what kind of people will donate to what stores. I’ve found designer handbags at thrift stores for only a few dollars. People are starting to catch onto the trend and will price the designer bags a lot higher than a few dollars, but you are still saving money. The other place to look is garage sales! A few weekends ago I found a house that had dozens of handbags, totes and wallets laid out on the ground with a sign saying “$2.00 for everything.” Just be versatile and creative; it’s the only way to save yourself some money right now. Who knows, maybe it’s something that you will catch on to and start doing all the time. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have a few really nice handbags, but keep in mind that there are tons of great deals out there on slightly used merchandise!
